Thousands of people started the day without power and about 600 Nova Scotia Power customers are still without electricity in Bridgewater, Coldbrook and Dartmouth.

Most of the outages occurred first thing this morning, says Nova Scotia Power spokesperson Bev Ware.

"Because the snow is at that freezing point, it's sticking to the lines and to the trees and bringing trees and branches on top of lines," she said.

At its peak, the outages affected about 16,400 customers.

Expected restoration times for the outages are as late as 2:30 p.m.
