RCMP say a teenager’s condition is improving after being shot outside the North Preston Community Centre Monday afternoon.

Police would not identify the victim but friends and neighbours told CBC News the victim was Raheem Downey, 15. They said Downey was playing basketball when he was shot. Police said the boy was shot in the mid-section.

People who know Downey say they're shocked he was the victim.

Downey is a promising boxer, who won a silver medal at the Canadian youth and Junior National Boxing Championships last year.

Meanwhile, searchers were at the centre Tuesday morning, scouring the area for any evidence.

The RCMP, Halifax Search and Rescue and the Eastern Shore Ground Search and Rescue team were taking part in the search.

Police said although there were many people nearby, no witnesses have come forward. They're appealing the public for help.
