No dumping at North Sydney Mall

The North Sydney Mall is warning people not to dump old furniture and garbage on its property.

The North Sydney Mall is warning people not to dump old furniture and garbage on its property.

The mall took out an ad this week in the Cape Breton Post that says the practice is unlawful and prohibited.

"We received a complaint from the North Sydney Mall, the North Sydney security company that looks after the mall," Const. Greg Sophocleous of the Cape Breton Regional Police told CBC News.

"Their complaint was that people were dumping garbage at the back of the mall around or in the their dumpsters," he said, adding that the dumping appears to be of a minor nature.

"I did advise the mall staff that they're going to have to secure their dumpsters," said Sophocleous, who deals with illegal dumping issues.

Sophocleous said he can't understand why people would be dumping garbage anywhere, especially when the municipality offers free, heavy garbage pickup.

"This has been an ongoing thing for years. I think people have been using the dumpsters at different locations," he said

Since September, police say they have caught about 100 people illegally dumping garbage.
