Metro Transit's new $14.7-million bus terminal at the Dartmouth Sportsplex opened on Monday morning.

The new terminal includes 16 accessible bus bays, an enclosed passenger waiting area, public washrooms, bicycle storage and a landscaped green roof.

The opening of the terminal has been delayed five weeks. It was originally scheduled to open Aug. 27 but the project was delayed as permits were put in place and the interior of the building was completed.

Passengers who are not able to use the stairwells should enter the terminal from the sidewalk on the Dartmouth Sportsplex side of the building, which can be accessed from either Thistle Street or Nantucket Avenue, said the Halifax Regional Municipality.

Metro Transit said the bus terminal — at the foot of the Angus L. Macdonald Bridge — is the busiest in the Halifax region, serving more than 23,000 passengers each weekday.
