N.S. firefighter awarded medal for icy rescue
A volunteer firefighter from Marion Bridge, N.S., is being honoured for rescuing two people from an icy river in 2009.
Darryl Boone was awarded the Medal of Bravery at a ceremony in Ottawa on Friday.
Boone and other firefighters were called to the Mira River on Feb. 15, 2009, when three ATV riders broke through the ice.
Two of the men were clinging to their floating machines when rescuers arrived.
Boone instructed his colleagues to pull a canoe to the edge of the hole where the men had gone in. He jumped into the freezing water to help the victims into the boat.
The men suffered hypothermia but survived the ordeal.
Two residents on the other side of the river pulled a third rider to shore using a rope.
