Murder charge laid in North Preston killing

The RCMP has charged a man with second-degree murder relating to a homicide in North Preston on Sunday.

RCMP have charged a man with second-degree murder in the death of Casey Marleen Downey in North Preston, N.S.

Max Demarco Smith, 24, of Halifax, is accused of killing Downey, 20, at a house in the community east of Dartmouth early Sunday.

Smith appeared in Dartmouth provincial court on Wednesday.

RCMP have not said how Downey died, but believe this is an isolated case and there are no other suspects.

RCMP officers found Downey’s body inside 1166 Downey Rd. just before 6:30 a.m. They were responding to two 911 calls about weapons at the home.

RCMP said there was a party underway at the house. As of Monday, investigators still hadn’t interviewed everyone who was there.

Downey is being remembered as a quiet and polite young man.

Sharon Downey, the victim’s cousin, said they had spoken recently and it didn’t seem like anything was wrong. She said her cousin was trying to complete his high school education.

Winnifred Willis Beals lives across the street from the house where Downey was found. The 81-year-old said she knew him well and that he helped her pick blueberries.
