A review of a fatal shooting in Yarmouth County has found the RCMP officer involved was justified in firing at a 70-year-old man.

The unnamed officer shot Robert Mansfield Gregory on Aug. 11, 2005, in a wooded area in Forest Glen, near Yarmouth. Gregory, who was armed, died at the scene.

A team of investigators with the RCMP and Halifax Regional Police reviewed the shooting and determined the officer believed he was facing imminent death or harm.

"[The review] did determine that the RCMP member was justified in using lethal force," RCMP spokesman Sgt. Frank Skidmore told CBC News Thursday.

The case is still under investigation, however. The team is awaiting more information from the medical examiner.

Skidmore said the officer involved in the shooting remained on active duty during the review.
