A man has died after his motorcycle hit a deer on the Cabot Trail Thursday.

The RCMP in Ingonish Beach were called to the scene near Buchanan Memorial Hospital around 9:45 am.

A group of five motorcycles was travelling north when a deer came out of a ditch and collided with one of the motorcycles, said the RCMP.

Police said the rider, a 47-year-old man from Ontario, was then knocked off his bike and hit a guard rail on the shoulder of the road.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said they would not identify the man until his family was notified.
