Mooseheads' MacAulay overcomes tough year off the ice
Stephen MacAulay of Cole Harbour finishing junior career Sunday
The Halifax Mooseheads are hoping to bring home the Memorial Cup on Sunday, but the long road to success has been filled with challenges for many of the hockey families, including Stephen MacAulay’s.
MacAulay was dealt a blow this year with the loss of his mother, Jean, to cancer.
But the Cole Harbour native has played through the pain.
"He thinks of his mother every day," said his father, Garth MacAulay, who is proudly watching his son on the ice at the Memorial Cup tournament in Saskatoon.
"That’s what carries him through each game and makes him a better person."
Mooseheads' fans say MacAulay is an inspiration, a leader on and off the ice.
The forward says for now, he’s focused on Sunday and the final match of his junior career. He’s hoping to end this year of highs and lows, as a champion.
