Two men were arrested and taken to hospital after leaping off a moving train in Pictou County, N.S., Wednesday.

RCMP said the incident started when the pair, aged 20 and 25, were trying to get home from a convenience store a little before 1 a.m.

"The initial investigation revealed the men were waiting for a cab in New Glasgow and decided to board a moving train, which was travelling through the town," said Corp. Mark Kellock.

The men got on the freight train without problem, but it soon sped up and the men were unable to get off at their intended stop.

The train operators, unaware they had passengers, continued on toward Port Hawkesbury, Cape Breton — 114 kilometres away.

"As the train slowed for a curve in the Pine Tree area, the men decided to jump, as they were now quite far from their intended destination," Kellock said.

The train was still going 40 kilometres an hour. The jump did not go well and both men were injured.

RCMP said officers received a 911 call just after 1 a.m. from one of the men. It took paramedics two hours to find them in the woods.

One man was taken to the Aberdeen Hospital and the other transferred to the QEII Hospital in Halifax. The extent of their injuries was not released.

Both were also arrested and face a charge of illegally entering a railway line.
