A man was stabbed during a fight in Dartmouth, N.S., early Sunday.

Halifax Regional Police say two men got into an altercation around 2:45 a.m. in the parking lot of the Parkside Pub at 14 Highfield Park Dr.

Sgt. Greg Robertson said witnesses told officers the dispute turned violent.

"One male produced a knife and began to stab the second male," he said.

Police arrived while the assault was happening. A 47-year-old man was taken to hospital with numerous stab wounds. The knife was recovered. A 23-year-old man was arrested.

"He is to be charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault and possession of a weapon dangerous to the public," Robertson said.

"It is a serious situation. Thankfully at this point it looks like the victim is stable and hopefully will recover."

Robertson does not believe alcohol was a factor in the disturbance. Police said the men did not appear to know each other.
