Man sent to hospital after Nine Mile River fire
A man is in hospital with burns and his house is destroyed after a fire in Nine Mile River, N.S., early Tuesday morning.
Officials say the fire started just after midnight at a home on Route 14.
RCMP Sgt. Craig Burnett said the man tried to put out the blaze, but it spread too quickly.
"He was taken to hospital with burns to his hands. He told the members last night he burned his hands trying to put the fire out," he said.
"From what we learned, he awoke to the fire, tried to put it out, got out of the house— it just took over."
The man's dog died in the fire.
RCMP say the cause of the fire is under investigation.
"The fire marshal's office was out and did a detailed investigation," Burnett said.
The Canadian Red Cross said it would help the man when he is released from hospital.
