Man faces gun charges after suspenseful Halifax search

Police have charged a man with firearms offences after a dramatic search Friday in central Halifax.

A 55-year-old man is facing a series of gun charges after a dramatic search in central Halifax on Friday.

Members of the Halifax Emergency Response Team surrounded a home on Compton Street after an officer spotted a man with a weapon in an aqua-coloured house at approximately 5:20 a.m.

As a precaution, police blocked Robie Street during morning rush hour and evacuated neighbours.

After several hours, a man and a woman were taken into custody.

"This evening, both parties were released. The woman was released without charges, and the male, the 55-year-old resident, was released for a court date in the new year," Staff Sgt. Bill Morris of the Halifax Regional Police told CBC News on Friday.

The firearm charges "stem from careless storage, unsafe storage, charges like that."

Morris said the street was closed for several more hours while officers made sure no one else was in the home.
