Flags will be at half-mast today at the provincial golf championship in Baddeck, after a death on the course.

The father of one of the players died on the Bell Bay course while his son was competing. Desmond Lewin of Judique, the father of player Peter Lewin, was watching his son play, said Michael Gillan, general manager of the course.

Desmond Lewin was looking for a golf ball in the rough in hole 11 when the problem developed.

"He collapsed into another one of the golfers, who was also assisting to find an errant golf ball and that's when we called over and got some help," said Lewin.

People on the scene performed CPR, but it wasn't enough. Lewin died at hospital in Baddeck.
