Man dies after collapse in Halifax police custody
Victim found unresponsive in cell
A man who was hospitalized after becoming unconscious in Halifax police lockup last week has died.
The 53-year-old man was arrested on Thursday afternoon for public intoxication and was found unresponsive in a jail cell several hours later.
Nova Scotia's Serious Incident Response Team said the man died on Sunday.
The unit is responsible for investigating all serious incidents involving police in Nova Scotia, whether or not there is an allegation of wrongdoing.
The victim's name has not been released.
A public report summarizing the results of the investigation must be filed within three months after the investigation is finished.
