Man charged in New Year's party death

A 24-year-old man has been charged with manslaughter in the death of another young man at a New Year's party, Halifax Regional Police said Monday.

Ryan Leeds, of Halifax, is scheduled to appear in Halifax provincial court Tuesday on the charge of manslaughter, as well as a charge of breach of recognizance.

Nathaniel Welsh, 23, of Halifax died Saturday in hospital after he was punched at a New Year's party early Friday evening. The altercation happened outside St. Mark's Community Centre on Russell Street in the city's north-end.

Police said he was punched and knocked to the ground, and was found unconscious.

A suspect turned himself in to Halifax Regional Police headquarters on Gottingen Street at about 6 p.m  Sunday.
