Halifax-area RCMP say a driver ran over a dog and bit an officer who went to arrest him.

RCMP said a man and a woman were walking dogs on Candy Mountain Road near Mineville late Sunday afternoon when a pickup truck sped by.

There was a brief but ugly exchange between the man and the driver.

"The driver then drove the truck back towards the man and the woman," said Const. Tammy Lobb, "and their dog was struck and killed."

RCMP went to a home on Candy Mountain Road to arrest a suspect. Lobb said a man bit one of the officers on the hand.

A 26-year-old man is due in Dartmouth provincial court Monday to face charges of:

  • Assault with a weapon (two counts)
  • Dangerous driving
  • Failure to remain at the scene of an accident
  • Assaulting a police officer
  • Resisting arrest
  • Causing unnecessary suffering to an animal
