A 48-year-old Halifax man has been charged in connection with an alleged sexual assault on Citadel Hill earlier this month.

Halifax Regional Police Const. Brian Palmeter said the man was arrested Monday night at a residence on Adams Avenue.

"We were obviously able to get a lot of information, not only from our victim, but from other people in the area," he told CBC News.

"He was known to police and I think that assisted in us being able to identify him as a suspect."

On May 22 at approximately 2 a.m., a 21-year-old woman left a party on Agricola Street and headed downtown. A man approached her and started to talk to her. He followed her for seven blocks.

When she reached Ahern Avenue, across from Citadel High School, the man tried to coax her to walk up Citadel Hill with him. She said no.

Police said the man grabbed her by the hair and dragged her over the marshy ground up the hill. The man knocked the woman to the ground and sexually assaulted her part way up the hill.

She managed to fight the man off and he fled. The woman called police.

"Through speaking to witnesses, they were able to identify that individual as being the suspect we were looking for," said Palmeter.

The man has been charged with sexual assault, unlawful confinement and uttering threats.
