Man breaks leg while running from police

A man suspected of shoplifting from Walmart in Dartmouth Crossing bolted from police and ended up breaking his leg, according to the province's Serious Incident Response Team.

A man suspected of shoplifting from Walmart in Dartmouth Crossing bolted from police and ended up breaking his leg, according to the province's Serious Incident Response Team.

The independent unit is now investigating the circumstances around the man's injury.

In a release, SIRT says the incident happened around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday.

The suspect was being escorted to a police vehicle when he took off. The man ran through several parking lots and across two streets as a Halifax Regional Police officer followed.

The man went down an embankment leading to the parking lot near the JYSK store, said the release.

The suspect was arrested, but police realized his leg was broken and they called an ambulance.

SIRT's mandate is to investigate all serious incidents involving police in the province.
