Man arrested in Mead homicide
A Halifax man faces a charge of second-degree murder in the shooting death of Shawn Mead.
Police said Russell Matthew Beaver, 23, was arrested Wednesday morning at a home in Clayton Park. He is due in court on Thursday.
Senior officials with Halifax Regional Police and RCMP announced the arrest Thursday, about three months after Mead was found dead.
Beaver is accused of shooting Mead, 32, on June 5.
Mead's body was discovered three weeks later inside 5529 Bilby Street when a friend went to check on him. His dog had also been killed.
Police said Beaver and Mead knew each other, but didn't give any details.
"Regardless, violent incidents, particularly those involving firearms, impact the sense of well-being in a community, and we hope this will help bring a sense of security to people living in the north end of Halifax. We also hope the laying of charges will bring some sense of closure to Shawn Mead's family," said Det. Sgt. Richard Lane.
Insp. Ken Goodine said the arrest was possible because people came forward with information.
