A Lawrencetown man faces numerous charges following a five-hour standoff in the community Thursday night.

RCMP said Michael Douglas Atwell, 66, is due in court Friday morning to face charges that include assault and uttering threats, as well as weapons offences.

Officers were called to a domestic dispute at a home on Maple Drive at about 5:30 p.m.

RCMP said four shots were fired by a man barricaded inside, but no one was hurt.

Heavily armed police were brought in. Homes in the area were evacuated and the road was closed to traffic as a precaution.

"This incident shows why police treat these situations seriously and go through the process of evacuating homes and closing roads," Halifax District RCMP said in a statement.

The standoff ended peacefully at about 10:40 p.m.
