A volunteer auxiliary officer is in serious condition in a Halifax hospital following a crash involving a Kentville police cruiser on Friday night.

Kentville Police Service Sgt. Darryl Brown said the accident happened around 10 p.m. AT on Route 12 while officers were conducting a roadside checkpoint.

A vehicle made a U-turn in an attempt to avoid the checkpoint, he said.

Officers then tried to stop the vehicle, and that's when the police cruiser left the road and overturned in the ditch.

The volunteer member is in serious but stable condition. A police officer was treated and released.
