Inmate in critical condition after fight

A prisoner at the Central Nova Scotia Correctional Facility in Burnside, N.S., is in hospital in critical condition after an altercation with another inmate.

A prisoner at the Central Nova Scotia Correctional Facility in Burnside, N.S., is in hospital in critical condition after an altercation with another inmate.

The offender fell down stairs in a living unit during a fight with another inmate at approximately 9:30 p.m. on Wednesday, according to Department of Justice spokeswoman Tara Walsh.

The prisoner was treated by health-care professionals at the jail and later transported and admitted to hospital.

The incident is being investigated by staff at the correctional facility and Halifax Regional Police.

Halifax Regional Police Const. Brian Palmeter said he did not expect charges to be laid Thursday. He said the investigation continues.
