A hiker discovered human remains while walking on the Fox Lake Hiking Trail Sunday morning.

A hiker discovered human remains while walking on the Fox Lake Hiking Trail Sunday morning.

Sgt. Greg Robertson of the Halifax Regional police said the discovery was made about a 30 minute hike along the route that begins near Kearney Lake Road and Belle Street.

The hiker called 9-11 around 11 a.m. Sunday morning.

"It appears they've been there a long time," said Robertson of the remains.  He estimated the time frame to be months.

Robertson said it does not appear there was any attempt to conceal the remains before they were found.

The major crime unit has been called in and the area has been blocked off.

"We're going to collect our evidence at the scene, check our missing persons reports and with the assistance of the medical examiner, we're going to attempt to identify the person," he said.

Robertson said police may be on the scene overnight.
