HRM seeks buyers for 2 schools

Need a school? The Halifax Regional Municipality has two for sale.

Need a school? The Halifax Regional Municipality has two for sale.

St. Patrick's-Alexandra Elementary in Halifax and West Chezzetcook Elementary are closing after the school year ends Thursday. The Halifax Regional School Board will give the keys to the municipality on Sept. 1.

HRM officials aren't wasting any time, however. They want private companies or non-profit groups to submit redevelopment proposals by mid-August.

Coun. David Hendsbee, whose district includes West Chezzetcook, said he hopes the elementary school on Highway 207 will be turned into apartments for seniors.

The municipality is selling a third property. The Gordon Bell building in Cole Harbour used to house administrative offices for the school board, but it has been vacant since the fall.

Officials say the Gordon Bell property is worth $3.7 million, while St. Patrick's-Alexandra is worth more than $4 million.

Prospective buyers will get a tour of the properties a few weeks before the deadline to submit proposals.
