Hike Nova Scotia opposes lifting Sunday hunting ban

Opponents of lifting the Sunday hunting ban in Nova Scotia say a government survey on the issue is skewed.

'I think we need to be objective about this,' says Janet Barlow

People opposed to lifting the Sunday hunting ban in Nova Scotia say a government survey on the issue is skewed.

The online survey asks people if they want the ban lifted and offers suggestions on why they might feel that way.

One hunter posted on social media that hunters could enter the survey multiple times.

“I think we need to be objective about this," said Janet Barlow with Hike Nova Scotia, which is against lifting the ban.

"When you look at the sheer number of hunters in the province as opposed to the sheer number of hikers and other outdoor recreators in the province, there is a clear, clear majority in favour of people who recreate in the outdoors as opposed to those who are just hunters."

Barlow says the way the survey is presented appears to favour lifting the ban.

The head of wildlife for the Department of Natural Resources says it's not.

Bob Petrie says the government wants a broader understanding of how people feel about the issue.

The department says removing the Sunday hunting ban would give hunters more opportunities to hunt and possibly improve population management.

Bag limits would remain the same.

The survey can be filled out until April 10.
