Head-on crash near Millville kills 3

Three people died Thursday evening in a head-on collision on Highway 105 in Cape Breton.

Three people died Thursday evening in a head-on collision on Highway 105 in Cape Breton.

RCMP were called to a stretch of highway between Millville and St. James Road at about 6:45 p.m.

Cpl. Ron MacDonald, with RCMP traffic services in Cape Breton, said a chain reaction began when a car heading west had a "minor sideswipe incident" with another vehicle.

The car continued on, he said, and moved to the right-hand shoulder to try to pass a pickup truck that was pulling a trailer.

"That attempt failed and it struck the trailer. The driver then lost control and unfortunately went into the east-bound lane and struck pretty much head-on an east-bound car."

The two drivers were killed, along with a passenger in one of the cars.

The section of highway was closed to traffic for several hours.

This is the second fatal collision in the area in less than three months.

Brian Malcom Stewart Parsons, 22, and John Francis MacKinnon, 83, were killed in a head-on crash on March 28.
