Halifax pine furniture store catches fire

Firefighters battled a blaze at the Pineworks furniture building in north-end Halifax on Monday.

Firefighters battled a blaze at the Pineworks furniture building in north-end Halifax on Monday.

A witness told CBC News he could see flames from the top of the building on Young Street, near the corner of Agricola Street, at about 1:45 p.m.

"The flames were pouring out," said Tom Crilley.

Black smoke could be seen from across the harbour in Dartmouth.

The Futon Store and Pineworks is on the main floor, but there is a residence at the top.

By 3 p.m., the fire was mostly extinguished. CBC reporter Shaina Luck said the fire appeared to be most intense in a third-floor apartment.

Firefighters said there were no injuries and nobody had to be rescued from the building.

Crews remained on the scene to ensure the fire is totally out. Streets in the area were closed and drivers advised to avoid that section of Young Street.
