Halifax bar staff rallies behind co-worker with cancer
Bearly's hosted fundraiser Sunday to support fellow bartender
Staff at a downtown Halifax bar are pulling together to help one of their own who has been diagnosed with cancer.
Dan Falvey was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in April. Falvey has been a bartender at Bearly's for more than 18 years.
On Sunday, Bearly's asked its customers to raise a glass in his honour and help raise money at the 'Everybody Knows Dan' fundraiser.
"When I work with Dan, I spend the whole night giggling," said Judy-Dawn Bulmer, who has worked alongside Falvey for nearly two decades.
"He's been out of work for about a month and a half now, and for the foreseeable future, so this is just to help him and his family."
The fundraiser featured live music and an auction.
"This isn't a goodbye, this is a celebration, it's positive. We want to help in the fight. We're not counting him out, let's keep it positive," said Blumer.
All the profits will go directly to Falvey, who is the breadwinner of his family. The bar is also selling Dan t-shirts.
"Our shirts say 'Everybody knows Dan'. I think we should have called it, 'Everbody loves Dan,' because the response has been phenomenal," said Sara Taylor, one of Falvey's co-workers.
Falvey told CBC he's touched by the event.
