Grief counsellors visit Sydney school after crash
Fergus Tyler MacKinnon, 17, and Mathew Gerard Fitzgerald, 15, died on Saturday
A crisis intervention team will be at Sydney Academy today to help students cope with the deaths of two teenagers in a weekend crash.
Fergus Tyler MacKinnon, 17, and Mathew Gerard Fitzgerald, 15, were in a stolen SUV that crashed on Kings Road in Sydney just after 3 a.m. Saturday.
The Dodge Journey struck two utility poles, a fire hydrant and a light post.
Cape Breton Regional Police said the owners of the SUV reported the vehicle stolen later that morning when they noticed it was missing from their driveway.
Police are still investigating the deadly crash, but said the skid marks on the road and the damage to the poles indicate that speed was a factor. The vehicle will be inspected this week.
The two teens were students at Sydney Academy. The principal said counsellors would be at the school on Monday.
Friends of the boys gathered at the crash site Saturday afternoon to lay flowers.
Neighbour Harold Rowe was dismayed to see beer at the site.
"To me, that is so inappropriate to put beer there. But somebody said to me that maybe that's their friends just saying, 'Here's to ya,'" Rowe said.
