Girl in hospital after pit bull attack

RCMP say a five-year-old girl was taken to the IWK hospital after being bitten by a pit bull dog in New Germany, on the south shore.

RCMP say a five-year-old girl was taken to the IWK hospital in Halifax after being bitten by a pit bull dog in New Germany, on the South Shore.

Police were called to a home around 4 p.m.

The little girl had been bitten on the face.

"The child, I think, sustained fairly serious injuries," said Sgt. Al Leblanc. "The matter is under investigation. We don't believe at this time that there was any negligence on the part of the occupants of the house, or the owner of the dog."

The owner managed to contain the dog before police arrived. Animal control now has it under quarantine, but police said the 18-month-old dog will be put down at the owner's request.

Leblanc called it an unfortunate incident. Police do not expect to lay charges in the case.
