Giant Tiger jobs attract hundreds in Sydney
At least 300 people apply for 50 positions
The new Giant Tiger store in Sydney, Cape Breton, has received hundreds of job applications.
The store is not expected to open until August but between 300 and 400 people have applied for the 50 jobs the company has posted.
Cape Breton's unemployment rate is about 16 per cent.
Dan Bower, the store's future manager, flew in to conduct job interviews this week.
"We've had lots of applications, actually had 300 or 400. So we've got that down to about 100 people now. We're going to hire about 50 people," he said.
"We'll be interviewing them and on Saturday we'll actually be signing everyone up at a job sign-up session."
Bower says they were impressed by the quality of the applications.
"Every individual that applied had great background in retail. A great, exciting talent pool for us to draw from so I'm very excited of the potential of all the people we're hiring," he said.
Bower says hiring decisions will be made by Saturday.
Giant Tiger is a Canadian-owned department and grocery store chain.
Bower says construction crews are finishing the store's interior now and it should be ready for the grand opening on Aug. 9.
It's located in the former Kmart building on Welton Street.
