Fraud, theft charges for ex-Shubenacadie band manager
Jeffery Cecil Hayes already charged with possession of the proceeds of crime
A former financial manager at the Shubenacadie First Nation, who is already charged with possession of the proceeds of crime, is now facing more allegations of financial crimes.
Jeffrey Cecil Hayes, 48, has been charged with breach of trust, theft and fraud over $5,000. Prosecutors allege as much as $170,000 was siphoned away from band coffers and that the victim of that fraud is the Shubenacadie First Nation.
Hayes was fired as the Shubenacadie band's financial director in 2012.
"The band has faith in the criminal justice system. We're very much looking forward to seeing the results as they go through court as anybody else is," said Nathan Sack, a spokesman for the Shubenacadie band.
Hayes was charged earlier this year with possession of the proceeds of crime in connection to his work at the Shubenacadie band. Police seized a luxury home in Halibut Bay, near Halifax, and several vehicles in connection with that investigation.
None of the charges have been proven in court.
