Former Bay employees want better severance
Former employees of a major Halifax department store are taking the company to small claims court over their severance packages.
The Hudson Bay Company closed its West End Mall location at the end of April, affecting about 70 people.
While some employees were transferred to another store, many lost their jobs. They are upset that the company only offered seven to 13 weeks of severance.
"Very sad," said Donna Boutilier, who worked at the store for 30 years and was among those who lost their jobs. "I never expected it to be such a small severance. Not nice."
Lawyers from Pink Larkin are representing 18 former workers in small claims court, which they say is an inexpensive way to get a quick settlement. Adjudicators will hear some of the cases in early June and decisions could be handed down a few days later.
