A fire in Elmsdale has gutted a home there. Investigators suspect lightning.

Firefighters were called to the home at about 4:30 a.m. The homeowner told them he was in bed when he heard a loud bang. He went to the kitchen to check it out, and saw that the room was glowing red.

The light was coming from outside the house, where the deck was engulfed in flames. By the time fire crews arrived, the flames were already shooting through the roof of the home.

They used foam to try to saturate the building, and managed to save the frame of the structure, but the interior was destroyed.

Three people and a pet dog escaped the fire unharmed. The family cat was found dead inside the home by firefighters.

The homeowner says he will be able to make an insurance claim for the fire.
