The big red barn, a well-known landmark in Cole Harbour, has been destroyed in a fire.

RCMP and firefighters were called to 255 Bissett Rd. just after 1 a.m. Tuesday.

The old barn was used as a storage facility by the Department of Natural Resources. It held fencing materials for the nearby Salt Marsh trail.

Firefighters say it was so dry that some stalls went it up in flames very quickly, so they didn't have much of a chance to save the building, the CBC's Paul Palmeter reported.

The barn is in an open area across from the former Halifax County Rehabilitation Centre, which was damaged in a fire in November.

That building was last used as a set for the television show Trailer Park Boys.

There's no word on what caused Tuesday's fire.
