A church in Antigonish County was destroyed in an early-morning fire Wednesday.

Firefighters were called to St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Maryvale just after 3 a.m.

Bernie Falkenham, with the North Shore Volunteer Fire Department, said the wooden church was engulfed in flames when he arrived.

"It's a total loss," he told CBC News.

An excavator knocked down the few remaining beams.

St. Mary's was one of four churches serving the area, Falkenham said. Mass was held every Saturday.

Parishioners say they will rebuild. The building was insured.

The investigation into the cause of the fire continues.
