Fire department buys land from Antigonish diocese

The Big Pond Volunteer Fire Department has bought land its hall sits on from the Diocese of Antigonish.

The Big Pond Volunteer Fire Department has bought land from the Diocese of Antigonish.

The fire hall sits on the land, and it was leased from the Dicoese.

Mike Britten is chief of the Fire Department.

He says ownership of the building was unclear under the lease arrangement.

And people were worried they could lose their fire hall in the sale of church properties to pay for sexual abuse claims.

"There's still a feeling in the community that we are a volunteer organization.  We do provide an essential service for the community and for the general public, especially on Route 4.  So, there's a feeling there that, you know, our hard-earned money should not have gone to purchase a piece of land, you know, for that reason," he said.

Britten says he can't say how much they paid for the land.

But he adds it did take years of fundraising money the Fire Department had in its bank account.
