More than a dozen university students occupied the constituency office of Finance Minister Diana Whalen Monday morning to protest the Liberal government's decision to lift the provincial tuition cap for one year.

In a news release the group dubs the protest a "study-in" and says the province's budget is "disastrous for post-secondary education."

The cap lift, announced in last week's provincial budget, allows universities to make a one-time market adjustment to tuition so they can charge similar amounts for similar programs. The tuition cap had been set at three per cent.

The cap will be re-instituted the following year, but will not apply to out-of-province, international or graduate students.
