A fire that killed a 70-year-old man in Cape Breton has been deemed accidental.

Cape Breton Regional Police said Sunday there is no evidence to indicate the fire in Florence was deliberately set.

Police and fire crews were called to the man's home on the Bras d'Or-Florence Road just before 8 p.m. Saturday.

The man was taken to Northside General Hospital where he died of his injuries.

His wife, who was also in the house at the time, was not hurt.

Police said it appears the fire started in the basement, but there was no word on what caused it.
