Nova Scotia's transportation minister says he believes everybody should be required to wear a seatbelt in the province and that exemptions should be ended.

Bill Estabrooks said a road action committee is looking at the issue of whether firefighters should be exempted from wearing seatbelts.

Police and firefighters should be setting a good example to the public and should be wearing seatbelts, said Estabrooks.

The Halifax fire service is asking the province to end the exemption for its firefighters.

Couriers, taxi drivers, emergency health-care workers and people with certain medical conditions can also get exemptions.

Estabrooks said he thinks everyone is safer wearing a seatbelt.
