Eastern Passage development unwanted: councillor

Halifax regional council will consider a new housing development in Eastern Passage, despite objections from the local councillor.

Halifax regional council will consider a new housing development in Eastern Passage, despite objections from the local councillor.

Armco Capital wants to build two six-storey apartment buildings and a number of townhouses near the Shearwater airbase.

Coun. Jackie Barkhouse said people in her district feel the development isn't appropriate for the neighbourhood.

She said residents also worry about traffic, access and safety.

"I'm telling you that I have heard all I need to hear about how best to proceed," Barkhouse said at Tuesday night's council meeting.

Municipal planning rules must be amended for the proposal to move forward.

Barkhouse said there was no need to proceed with a public hearing on the issue, but council voted 12-11 to do so.
