A California man caught at the Halifax Stanfield International Airport with child pornography on his laptop has been sentenced to four months in jail.

Robert William Matheson, 66, pleaded guilty in Dartmouth provincial court on Tuesday to smuggling and possessing child pornography.

In October, Matheson's laptop was searched by a border officer at the airport.

"There was primarily images depicting males, possibly teenage males engaged in a variety of sexual activities," said Jason Cannon, a spokesman for the Canada Border Services Agency.

"As well, there were several textual stories which depicted the exploitation of young males as young as the age of eight."

Cannon said Matheson's laptop contained 2,820 images, 285 videos and 10 written stories depicting sex acts between young boys and older men.

Matheson, who owns property in Pictou, was remanded to the Central Nova Scotia Correctional Facility in Burnside.

The Canada Border Services Agency said staff have dealt with 17 seizures of child pornography in the Atlantic region so far this year.
