Halifax Regional Police have charged an elementary school teacher with child porn offences.

Adriano Gerald Benigno, 44, of Halifax faces charges of accessing, possessing and making available child pornography. Benigno is a teacher with Mr. B's Learning Centre at St. Stephen's Elementary School in Halifax.

Police arrested Benigno at a residence on Raleigh Court in Halifax Friday morning. He was released Friday afternoon on conditions including that he not use computers and stays away from children.

He is due in Halifax Provincial Court April 26.

Doug Hadley, spokesman for the Halifax Regional School Board, said police have not indicated that students at any of its schools were involved.

He said the school board was shocked to hear the news and Benigno was sent on paid administrative leave effective immediately.

"As a school board, we will conduct our own investigation and we will be following the proceedings of the court very closely to determine what the future holds for his employment," Hadley told CBC News.

Benigno has been employed by the board for five years and spent the last two at St. Stephen's Elementary. Hadley said phone calls will be made to parents who have students who dealt directly with Benigno.
