Ceremony set for swearing in Nova Scotia's 1st NDP premier

NDP Leader Darrell Dexter will officially become the premier of Nova Scotia next week.

NDP Leader Darrell Dexter will officially become the premier of Nova Scotia next week.

Dexter and his cabinet will be sworn in at a ceremony next Friday evening at the Cunard Centre in Halifax.

"It's an historic event and we wanted to share it with all Nova Scotians," he said in a release.

The New Democrats won 31 of 52 seats in Tuesday's general election, becoming the first NDP government anywhere in Atlantic Canada. It's also the province's first majority government since 2003.

The Liberals won 11 seats in the election, while the Progressive Conservatives slipped to 10 and third-party status.

Lt.-Gov. Mayann Francis will swear in the 12-member cabinet at 6 p.m. The ceremony will be open to the public.
