Cape Breton pianos out of tune
Cape Breton's main piano tuner is sick, leaving many instruments on the island out of tune.
Mike MacDonald, better known as Red Mike or Piano Mike, suffered an aneurysm five weeks ago. He's been off the job ever since.
Pianist Peter Fraser said many pianos in the area are in need of tuning and repair.
"The pianos are getting into shabby shape," said Fraser, a musician and teacher for 45 years.
"There's lots of room for another tuner even if Mike is going full-time, which he probably won't be for a while."
Gary Trenholm said his business, Doctor Piano in Halifax, has been getting several calls a day from Cape Bretoners looking for a tuner.
"I would love to find someone who's gifted, got the talent or has the hobby already started that would like to make a career and take care of all the pianos in the Cape Breton region, because there's been quite a void there for a long time," Trenholm said.
With the holiday season around the corner, Trenholm plans to send a tuner to Cape Breton for at least a week.
MacDonald said he hopes to be back tuning pianos in a couple of weeks.
