C.B. highway collision kills 1

One person was killed when a pickup truck collided with a tractor-trailer near Millville on Monday.

A pickup driver was killed in a collision with a tractor-trailer Monday on Highway 105 in Cape Breton.

The crash happened at 6:45 a.m. on Boularderie Island, west of Bras d'Or.

RCMP said the pickup was heading west on the TransCanada Highway when it struck the oncoming truck.

"It appears at first glance now the pickup truck may have crossed the centre line and the two collided virtually head on," said Cpl. Ron MacDonald.

The force of the collision sent the pickup flying into a guard rail.

The pickup driver died at the scene. There was no one else in the vehicle.

The driver of the transport truck was taken to hospital. Police said his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

There was no word on why the pickup driver veered into the oncoming lane. Road conditions were clear and dry at the time.

A section of Highway 105 between Millville and St. James roads was temporarily closed.

A tow truck removed the mangled pickup truck. But the tractor-trailer loaded with televisions and furniture was still lying on its side in the ditch at noon.

"It's gonna be probably until after supper before they get that out of there because they have to unload it and reload it into another trailer," said MacDonald.
