A 15-year-old boy was killed Tuesday night after his all-terrain vehicle hit a second ATV on a trail in Nova Scotia's South Shore, RCMP say.

Second teen seriously hurt on South Brookfield trail

A 15-year-old boy is dead and a second teen badly hurt in an ATV crash last night in southern Nova Scotia.

It happened on a wooded trail near South Brookfield in Queens County.

Four teenaged boys were out for a ride on two ATVs.

RCMP Staff Sgt. Jeff Wells said one ATV tried to pass the other.

"The one in the rear decided to pass the one in front. Their tires struck, and the driver lost control, went into the woods, struck a tree, and as a result the driver was killed and the passenger was seriously injured," said Wells.

Wells said the boy who died was from Caledonia in North Queens.

His 14-year-old passenger suffered broken bones and internal injuries. He was taken to hospital in Halifax in serious condition.

Wells said the victims were wearing helmets and alcohol was not a factor in the crash.

The two 16-year-old boys on the second ATV were not injured.
