Beach to reopen after toilet tipping

A Halifax-area lake is expected to reopen Wednesday, two days after lifeguards found a portable toilet in the water.

A Halifax-area lake is expected to reopen Wednesday, two days after lifeguards found a portable toilet in the water.

Saunders Beach on Paper Mill Lake in Bedford has been closed since Monday.

The Halifax Regional Municipality says after two days of water quality tests, levels of E.coli and other bacteria are low enough to allow the beach to reopen.

"We don't have concerns about the levels of bacteria in the water there. And we're very relieved that the tests came back as they did," said Shaune MacKinlay, a spokeswoman for HRM.

There were no reports of illness.

Another portable toilet has been trucked to the area. It's anchored to a concrete pad to prevent a similar vandalism incident.
