A 17-year-old girl is dead following an all-terrain vehicle accident in Cape Breton.

A 17-year-old girl is dead following an all-terrain vehicle accident in Cape Breton.

On Saturday, the Inverness RCMP, paramedics and the local volunteer fire department responded to a 911 call reporting an ATV accident involving a Cheticamp girl.

The girl was a passenger on an ATV that was traveling with a group along West Big Intervale Road, a rural road near Portree.

The RCMP is investigating the cause of the accident, but have so far said that the driver of the ATV lost control and struck a rock.

He received only minor injuries.

Weather halted air ambulance

RCMP Const. Brad Anderson said that paramedics and the fire department's responders were already on scene before police arrived.

"They were attempting to stabilize the victim and [were] requesting a helicopter to transport her to medical treatment," he said.

"Unfortunately, there was pending bad weather, which prevented the helicopter from departing," he said.

Anderson said an ambulance was able to reach the accident scene and take the girl to hospital.

"That's not to say that had a helicopter been able to attend there that the outcome would be any different," he said.

"My understanding was that the injuries she received were obviously very severe."

The girl was pronounced dead in hospital.

Police are not releasing her name until all family have been notified.
